First, isn't this cover just gorgeous???

Based on the reviews I'd read on Goodreads, I didn't expect too much from this book but I actually found it quite entertaining albeit basic. There was a surprising twist I didn't see coming at all in just chapter three which really made the story interesting and Luna very bad-ass. This is based on Rapunzel, the twist being there has been an eclipse going on for 17 years so it is dark 23 hours a day and creatures called dwellers hunt humans in the dark. Luna is of course the lost princess growing up in a tower, but she gets out and goes hunting nearby with one of her keepers. Her parents were of course murdered and an evil guy now rules Relhok and he's hunting her. Fowler comes along and well, you know.

Yes, Luna and Fowler do sort of have insta-love but they try to hide it from each other and don't act on it for a month or so after meeting once they've gotten to know each other better. But still the book has a lot of writing just about them and meh, it wasn't bad but it wasn't necessary.

However, not a whole lot really happens in this book but its kind of okay because I think the intention was to center on exploring the relationship between Luna and Fowler while setting up the world before getting down and dirty in what I assume will be an exciting sequel. The world was thankfully well explained unlike the last book I read, *cough* Given to the Sea *cough*, and the author even re-explained the need to know parts multiple times to ensure that we knew what had happened in this realm.

I couldn't believe the book ended on the cliffhanger it did! I literally yelled, "What?! That's it?!" in my car when the audiobook just abruptly ended. I do hope the sequel has a good story to it or it should be smushed into one longer book with this one.

There was also another identity twist toward the end which I started guessing a chapter before it was actually revealed because of a thought a character had that hinted toward it. But had we not had the hint, it would have completely blown my mind. I like when books do that, it's hard to do that to me nowadays.

I actually quite enjoyed this book. It wasn't anything super amazing but it was an easy and fun read and I look forward to the sequel to find out what just happened in that swamp...

  1. I just picked up this book a month or so back, but I'm keeping it on my shelves for now until I can get my hands on the second novel and be able read them back to back. It sounds like a really good read so I'm definitely looking forward to it.

    1. It was pretty good and I'm glad my library app has the sequel ready for me. I started listening to another book before I realized it did though so I'll finish that one first before moving on to Rise of Fire.
