Rise of Fire by Sophie Jordan

Rise of Fire by Sophie Jordan

My rating: 6/10

Would I reread it: Maybe

So I'm still in my reading slump but this was a very quick and fun audiobook to listen to. It is the sequel to Reign of Shadows and picks up exactly where that book left off: Luna jumping into the mud after Fowler was captured by dwellers.

I have a love-hate relationship with this book. It is so fun and easy to listen to, and yet nothing really happens until the end and then its all rushed. I didn't realize this was only a duology until I had about 1.5 hours left in it and at that point I had no idea how Luna and Fowler planned to save Rhelok because they had no plan.

Basically what happens in this book is Luna saves Fowler from the dweller nest. Runs into soldiers from neighboring country who take them back to their castle when they learn Fowler is prince of Rhelok and needs medical attention. King recognizes Luna as she resembles her mother. He sends word to Fowler's dad who wants Luna dead. Luna is now betrothed to the King's son and Fowler is betrothed to the King's daughter, they are upset. Jealous girl tries killing Luna. Luna and Fowler are in love, they try to escape but are caught by the prince. The old King now wants to marry Luna since he couldn't have her mom. Prince hates his dad and helps Luna and Fowler escape. They run into Fowler's dad at a standoff with the old pervert king. Luna is sacrificed to the dwellers. She kills the dweller queen and comes back up to command the dwellers to kill both sadistic old kings. She is now queen, marrying Fowler, and keeping the dwellers at bay with her queenly dweller control power. The end.

See, not much happened.Like it was interesting and I was invested in the characters. Fowler is fun but he was sick/knocked out for a lot of this book. Luna is just bad-ass because she's blind and people don't really notice because of how daredevil-like she is. It's just really sad for a novel to be able ot be summarized in such short sentences in a single paragraph. Sophie Jordan's writing does have a certain quality to it that makes it flow easily. I just feel like this could have had more substance and a less really quick climactic ending.

I would recommend this book if you're not looking for a book with too much substance and just want a fun/quick read.
